Her weight &#104;&#097;&#115; &#098;&#101;&#101;&#110; &#097; &#112;&#114;&#111;&#098;&#108;&#101;&#109; &#097;&#115; well, spiraling upwards &#111;&#102; 60 lbs within &#116;&#104;&#101; past 20 years. <p> It seems a complete contradiction when you hear about people doing a workout GIVES them more energy, when all you are actually doing is burning lots of <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/calories/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Calories">calories</a> (ie. ENERGY!!!)</p>
<p> Having once been a desk jockey, spending 8+ hours a day sat in front of a screen, it is as if that computer monitor, telephone and my boss was sucking all that precious energy out of me.</p>
<p> I was not alone!</p>
<p> You could see it in the faces of the men and women working around me, by the time 6 O&#8217;clock came by they would wearily pull on their coats and jackets, trudge down to the car park and set off home ready for the sofa and TV remote.</p>
<p> The problem with this energy drain is we would always be looking for the quick &#8220;pick-me-up&#8221;. Normally this comes in the form of snack machine fare, soda drinks packed with sugar, the post work alcoholic drinks and a visit to the curry house or fast food outlet on your journey home.</p>
<p> Coupled with your levels of inactivity this causes the inevitable weight gain, lowering of self esteem, energy and enthusiasm, in a horrible vicious circle&#8230;</p>
<p> Thankfully there is a solution, but it does require your first step, luckily we do have a naturally occurring chemical on our side to help us on the way once we do get going, beta-endorphin.</p>
<p> This chemical gives us a natural high after doing a workout, that kind of feel good glow. What&#8217;s more it is possible to become addicted to this feeling, making the decision to pack a bag for the gym easier and easier!</p>
<p> It is important to understand under what conditions you need to invoke a flood of beta-endorphin, there is an easy way and a hard way&#8230;</p>
<p> It may seem strange to learn that the hardest way to get the rush is the most common method of workout that is adopted. When you jump on to your favorite cardio machine in the gym, or pull on your trainers for a jog it can take in excess of 50 minutes, according to clinical studies, in the &#8220;fat-burning zone&#8221; to get a decent kick of endorphin. The problem is it takes an awful lot of motivation to stick out a long and slow workout for a bit of a high.</p>
<p> Now I suppose you don&#8217;t really want to know about the hard way!!</p>
<p> The easy way comes in the form of short-sharp bursts of physical activity, the studies show that this style of workout normally brings about a bigger endorphin hit in less time than the long, slow, steady state cardio workouts.</p>
<p> The workouts can take the form of quick 25 minute cardio interval routines, where the most tedious part is the warm up and cool down.</p>
<p> Another option is your traditional circuits style routines, a series of exercises done intensively, each one for 30 seconds, then taking a short rest as you move on to the next exercise. Not only are these workouts fun, you&#8217;ll burn plenty of <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/calories/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Calories">calories</a> during and after just a 30 minute workout.</p>
<p> The third option comes in the form of bodyweight, multi-muscle, multi-dimensional exercises done at an intensity and tempo that will exhaust the muscles in your body quickly. Exercises like squats, lunges, step ups, push ups, bodyweight rows and pull ups (Notice I didn&#8217;t say crunches or sit ups, avoid wasting your precious workout time on exercises that really don&#8217;t help that much. <p> You can set yourself a great workout that is done in 40 minutes with these exercises, all giving you the endorphin rush to boot too!</p>
<p> Many of our clients report a rush of energy and actual enthusiasm when they come to do their workouts! One such client, a particularly stressed and sedentary IT contractor, who really despised the thought of working out at the end of the day, started appearing in the Gym more and more frequently, until I started seeing him there EVERY evening! I questioned him on his new found enthusiasm, he said &#8220;I still don&#8217;t relish the thought of coming to do my workouts, but I get one hell of a kick out of finishing it!!&#8221;</p>
<p> So you see there is a solution to your lack of energy and motivation, there truly is a &#8220;natural&#8221; high from getting short-intensive workouts done. Yes it is tough making the first step, but get yourself in your local gym from tomorrow and get a safe and legal chemical high from a quick and hard workout.</p>

<p class="articletext" align="justify">Have you ever noticed how fast some people can eat?  While no one has ever actually inhaled food, it is surprising how fast some folks can make a meal disappear.<span id="more-1515"></span>  </p>
<p> When Americans go out to eat, we usually order a drink and socialize while waiting to be seated.  Some order another drink before the meal is served, but when the food comes out it is time to eat. </p>
<p> I lived on Okinawa, Japan for nearly 10 years, and one of the first things I noticed was how long it takes the locals to eat a meal.  Compared to America, dinners seem to last forever!    </p>
<p> Does speed of eating indirectly affect body weight?   Perhaps.  Some fast-paced styles of eating seem to be synonymous with weight gain.  Gulping food in a hurry, eating on the run, binge eating when hungry, filling your mouth with food before finishing the last bite, and routinely piling large amounts of food on your plate are examples of eating habits that may lead to overindulgence and weight gain. </p>
<p> If you already carry a few extra pounds, you have another problem.   While people of normal weight feel full after about 10 minutes of eating, researchers from the University of Florida found that it took nearly twice as long for that signal to reach the brain of subjects who were overweight. When your brain thinks you are still hungry, it is likely that you are not going to stop eating, no matter how much food you have already had.            </p>
<p> If you find yourself the first one finished at every meal, you should make a conscious effort to slow down your eating!  Practice lengthening the time it takes you to eat by timing your meals.   Put your fork down between every bite.  Chew thoroughly and swallow before putting more food in your mouth. Take your time, try to relax, and savor your food.   Give your brain a chance to receive the message that your stomach is full. And DO NOT be afraid to leave food on your plate! </p>
<p> Research carried out at Penn State University has determined that the volume of food is more crucial than total <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/calories/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Calories">calories</a> when determining your feeling of fullness.  This means that you will feel full while eating fewer <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/calories/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Calories">calories</a> if you fill up first on lower calorie high volume foods.   </p>
<p> Baked potato is a perfect example of a low calorie, high volume food that also requires a long time to eat.  Heavy foods that contain water such as fruit also make you feel full on fewer <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/calories/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Calories">calories</a>.  Hot, full bodied soup is always an excellent pre dinner choice.  </p>
<p> The hungrier you are, the faster you&#8217;ll eat. Use low calorie snacks during the day to keep that appetite in check.    </p>
<p> If you have a tendency to eat fast and would like to lose weight, deliberately slowing down your eating at mealtime is a good first step. Allow yourself 20 minutes to finish a regular meal, but remember that the extra time isn&#8217;t a license for extra indulgence.  </p>
<p> It may take some getting used to, but once you start eating slower you may find yourself feeling full before you are finished.   And eating less!</p>

<p class="articletext" align="justify">I have a theory that not every one is willing or able to accept that the sole outcome of their fitness and nutrition program is based on personal responsibility.<span id="more-1506"></span> There are a few circumstances in which an individual has no control over their weight gain or weight loss, but for the majority of us our results can be expressed by our resolve. </p>
<p> A few things prompted me to write this article about personal responsibility.  One is a television show that I watched last night.  Other reasons include a few emails I received this past week and a personal friend&#8217;s comments to me.  Each of these situations taught me something rather interesting.  Something I already knew, but didn&#8217;t quite think about until now. </p>
<p> There is a race to melt fat, tone up, slim down, and feel great about your body before the summer hits.  Have you noticed an increase in diet pill commercials lately?  What about exercise gadget infomercials or  new diet books?  The dreaded warm weather means many of us are about to bare skin that we&#8217;d rather keep hidden. </p>
<p> In this frenzy to shed the weight I have been receiving a bombardment of emails from folks looking for a magic solution.  They are convinced I know something they do not.   </p>
<p> A few emails this past week blew me away.  One of them accused personal trainers of knowing the secret to weight loss, but thought they refused to tell anyone the answer so they wouldn&#8217;t lose clients.  Another email practically begged me to spill my guts about my training program because the person thought I had a super-duper program that only personal trainers use. </p>
<p> Admittedly I got a bit upset at first.  I mean do people actually think personal trainers know the secret to fat loss, but are unwilling to share it with others?  Nonsense.   </p>
<p> We share it with folks all the time.  It&#8217;s all about eating well and enough and being active out often.  And just for the record my nutrition and exercise routine are the exact same routines I talk about on my site and in my ebook.  I actually follow my own advice! </p>
<p> Two other things worth mentioning happened to me within the past week as well.  I watched a television show about changing your family lifestyle.  The point is to become active and eat healthy so that children grow up healthy.  I loved the idea behind the show and that is why I watched.  About half way through this particular episode I was in shock. </p>
<p> The children, aged 6 and 11, were actually eating better and becoming more active.  They were following the rules the nutritionist had set for them.  They were healthier and happier.  Guess who was unwilling to change?  Mom!   </p>
<p> She sat out on her front porch swing, smoking a cigarette, and talking to the camera about how this show was supposed to be for and about her children and not her.  Therefore she should be able to eat when and what she wants. </p>
<p> Lastly I had a friend approach me and tell me how lucky I was to be fit.  She went on to talk about how she wishes she could go kayaking and hiking as much as I did.  She talked about how I am so lucky to work in the fitness industry and what a coincidence it was that I enjoyed my job.  She went as far as to say she wishes she could have some of my luck. </p>
<p> Between those few emails, the television show and my friend&#8217;s comments it became abundantly clear that many people lack personal responsibility.   </p>
<p> Each scenario boiled down to one basic tenet- only you are responsible for you.  No one can make you lose fat.  Not even me!  I cannot force you to stick to an exercise program.  I cannot demand you kayak more or love your job.  I wish I could, but I cannot. </p>
<p> Only you can make changes in your life.  You are the only person who can create a happy, healthy, vibrant, loving and thriving life.  I can provide the tools and motivation, but you are the master of your destiny.  You are the sole force that determines how successful you will be in your life.  Ask yourself these questions: </p>
<p> &#8211; Do you love waking up in the morning because you are excited about your day? </p>
<p> &#8211; Are you truly happy with your body? </p>
<p> &#8211; Are you thrilled with your personality? </p>
<p> &#8211; Do you really believe that you are in control of your life? </p>
<p> &#8211; Do you acknowledge that your thoughts are not enough?  Action is key. </p>
<p> There will be hard times, but with the proper tools, motivation and goals you can and will overcome them. </p>
<p> Personal responsibility is the main success factor in fat loss.  It is not luck that I find time to hike and kayak.  It is not coincidence that I love my job.  We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we decide to spend that time really determines our life&#8217;s outcome.  </p>
<p> Watching 4 hours of television each night is not conducive to you if your goal is fat loss.  It&#8217;s all about personal responsibility and doing what you know is right for you.  So I ask, are you responsible enough to lose fat?</p>

<p class="articletext" align="justify">Just like great cities were not built in a day, your weight gain did not happen in one day, one week or even one month.<span id="more-1490"></span> Do not expect to start exercising or eating correctly instantly as it will take time to set good habits and change your lifestyle. Try changing one bad habit into a good habit one at a time. Make a goal to start one supportive habit each week. It is about making progress in the right direction and not perfection.  </p>
<p> The small daily changes in your habits make the big outcome over time.  </p>
<p> A journey of a thousand steps starts with the first step. You need to focus on the small individual positive steps in order to realize the weight loss that you want to accomplish. Moving in the right direction will cause you to build momentum and the weight loss will just seem to happen. It is the willingness to not give up but to keep going with small daily steps that will get you through the hard times. You have to take a &#8220;whatever It takes&#8221; attitude where failure is not an option. </p>
<p> So how can you do it? Keep in mind that your weight gain did not happen overnight and your weight loss will not happen overnight either. Focus on a slow and small weight loss each week with 1-2 pounds per week and not 10 pounds per week. The slow progressive weight loss will help you lose the weight and keep it off. This way you will not yo-yo diet where you lose weight too fast (consisting mostly of water, muscle and bone mass) only to gain back more than you lost.  </p>
<p> Aim for a couple of small improvements each week. <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/small-changes/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Small Changes">Small changes</a> each day to begin eating healthier and exercising so that today is better than yesterday. These small improvements will build into big improvements over time.  </p>
<p> Beware of &#8220;quick fixes&#8221; that promise overnight fat loss. They can do more damage to your body and metabolism than they do good. Plan for a slow steady weight loss that will give you the desired results over time and last a lifetime. We all want that instant result only to be disappointed and quit in the end. Remember it did not happen overnight and cannot be corrected overnight. </p>
<p> Break your weight loss plan down into small goals. Have a one month goal, a three month goal, a six month goal and a one year goal. Make sure your goals flow naturally one into the next. This way you will not be overwhelmed and quit.  </p>
<p> How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you lose the weight? The same way! One pound at a time. Make sure to make realistic and achievable goals, and then reward yourself when you accomplish each small goal. Reward yourself with a new dress or a healthy night on the town with the girls. This will keep you on track and help you to achieve the next goal. Remember a half-hearted try will result in a half-hearted outcome.  </p>
<p> Life is going to happen and put all kinds of obstacles in your way. You must face these challenges head on and not let any situation get you off course. You should try for improvement each day, not perfection.  </p>
<p> If you did not exercise today or you did eat every meal correctly today just do better tomorrow. Learn from the situations and set backs so that you will be able to handle them differently next time. Then get back on track and keep going with your daily improvements. Learn not to blame, create excuses and beat yourself up each time you have a minor set back. Remember do not sweat the small stuff.  </p>
<p> Keep focused on the end result (tight, skinny jeans) and not the obstacles from yesterday. Strive to do better today than you did yesterday. It is the daily actions that will keep you going and start to show in the belt line.  Train your mind to equate a small daily goal with an enormous goal. It is all about meeting the goal for today and worrying about the goal for tomorrow, tomorrow. It is just about today!!!  </p>
<p> Be flexible with yourself. The best way to fail is to set unrealistically strict goals that are too easy just to say &#8220;I do not have time for that today&#8221;. If you set your goal that you HAVE to work out 30 minutes a day and you can only get in 20 minutes today, then just do 20 minutes. 20 minutes are better than none. But if you are too rigid then you will not do any because you only allowed yourself 30 minutes of exercise or none.  </p>
<p> Set a goal to exercise 2-3 days per week as much as you can each time up to 30 minutes. You will be less likely to disappoint yourself when you can only work out 20 minutes today instead of 30 minutes. </p>
<p> If you set a goal to run a marathon and you exercised in training but could not find the endurance to finish the race, you are still better off with the training that you did do. So set your goals with that concept in mind. If you do not do everything perfectly, then you are still better off with what you did do than not doing anything at all. It is a win-win concept. This will help you through the rough spots and keep you going. </p>
<p> You can help your weight loss effort by boosting your metabolism.</p>
<p class="articletext">Keep in mind that your weight gain did not happen overnight and your weight loss will not happen overnight either. Focus on a slow and small weight loss each week with 1-2 pounds per week and not 10 pounds per week. So how can you do it? Find out how.</p>
