A well balanced diet improves your overall health by reducing the risk of serious health ailments such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes just to name a few.<span id="more-1613"></span></p>
<p> The truth of the matter is healthy eating does not mean depriving you of your favorite meals. In fact, it means quite the opposite. Healthy eating is simply incorporating natures food in its most natural state into your diet. It is pertinent however to establish healthy cooking methods as well as eating habits in ways not to interfere with the nutritious value of food Mother Nature intended.</p>
<p> Vitamins, minerals and water as well as protein, fats and carbohydrates are nutrients our body needs. Protein, fats and carbohydrates provide the calories necessary for our body to function properly. In simplest terms, calories are equivalent to gas for a car. They are the fuel our body needs in order to run. A certain amount of calories are required to keep the body working efficiently and effectively. Consuming more calories than your body requires however will be stored as fat.</p>
<p> As well as improving overall health, a well balanced diet is necessary in order to lose weight or maintain your current weight. Unfortunately, many of us are not familiar or perhaps confused as to what is considered a well balanced diet. Healthy eating plans consist of the following nutrients:</p>
<p> Protein</p>
<p> Our daily requirements for a well balanced diet consist of 10 &#8211; 30% of protein rich foods such as fish, lean meat, low fat dairy products, beans and nuts. Our body requires protein to build, maintain and repair tissues in the body such as muscle, internal organs and skin and is also necessary for our immune system. </p>
<p> Protein is composed of 22 amino acids which are necessary for our body to stay healthy. Fortunately the body produces 14 amino acids and the other 8 we must get from food. The best protein rich food comes from animal sources therefore if you are a vegetarian it is very important that you eat a variety of good protein sources from plants.</p>
<p> Healthy Fats</p>
<p> Believe it or not you do need some fat in your diet. About 30% of your caloric intake in a day should be made up of fats. Unfortunately this is the one area most of us aren&#8217;t <br /> lacking in, we eat too much fat. Foods high in saturated fat and trans fats should be avoided as these can lead to many health problems.</p>
<p> Carbohydrates</p>
<p> The primary source of energy for the cells in the body is glucose which is a sugar. Carbs are where we get our fuel which is in the form of glucose. Carbohydrates should make up about 60% of your daily caloric intake. So as you can see, carbohydrates should be the bulk of your calories. Keep in mind however it is important that you consume the right kind of carbohydrates. Good sources of carbohydrates are fruits, veggies, whole grain foods and legumes. The occasional sweet is okay, but shouldn&#8217;t be your primary source.</p>
<p> Vitamins</p>
<p> Vitamins are essential for many chemical reactions that exist in the body. Generally speaking, the body does not produce vitamins and for that reason we need to obtain them through the food we eat. In many cases, taking daily vitamin supplements assure proper nutrition. </p>
<p> Vitamins are categorized into fat-soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. The fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are absorbed with fats from the intestine into the blood and then stored in fatty tissue. They are not generally excreted in the urine thus consuming large amounts of them are not necessary.</p>
<p> The water soluble vitamins are C, B12 and the family of the B complex. These vitamins are stored in the body for a short period of time and are quickly excreted in the urine. Consequently we need to make certain our diet is high in vitamin C and B vitamins in order to meet the requirements of the body. </p>
<p> Minerals </p>
<p> At least 13 minerals are essential to health. Important among them are potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Others such as iron, zinc, and copper, are needed in only small amounts. Minerals such as iron, potassium and calcium are absolutely vital for healthy living and should be consumed daily. Most people obtain adequate amounts of minerals from their diet but if not, a good vitamin containing minerals should be sufficient.</p>
<p> Water</p>
<p> The benefits of drinking water and maintaining the proper amount of body fluid is essential in supporting many of our bodily functions such as digestion, nutrient transportation, body temperature and circulation to name a few. About 65% of our body is primarily water. Drinking eight glasses of water daily is the simplest way of assuring your body is receiving the adequate amount of water for a healthy body.</p>
<p> Recognizing unhealthy eating habits is foremost in managing your eating behavior. Once you realize these unhealthy tendencies you can make a conscious effort to modify them and implement a healthy eating plan into your daily life. The importance of good nutrition is imperative for your health today as well as the years to come.</p>

<p class="articletext" align="justify">I walk the streets of Chicago every day and see people eating fat food everywhere.<span id="more-1568"></span>Let&#8217;s face it we just want to fill our bellies with good tasting satisfying foods. We eat food that is really not food at all but fatty foods full of &#8220;heart attack on a plate&#8221; so called nutrition. </p>
<p> Still people do it all day long every day of the year. Then you get sick and stay at home. We&#8217;ll you stay and home and eat all kinds of processed and fatty foods. </p>
<p> I ate all these foods myself because I was nervous, and simply craving something else more positive in my life. I didn&#8217;t get what I really craved for so I turned to food, pop, bear, pizza. </p>
<p> We all do this all the time. We use food as a crutch for something else missing in our lives. Silly thing, but its true&#8230; admit it. I have a friend who was up and down. He starved himself to keep his weight down. And it worked until he went home and started eating everything in sight but the kitchen sink. Admit it; you probably do the same thing. Fast, then &#8220;Chow Down&#8221;. </p>
<p> Another thing I see all the time is in spring and early summer fat people in jogging suits trying to walk or run to try and lose weight. You&#8217;ve probably done this one or more times. Does it work? Hell NO! You go home and start drinking beer and eat your favorite pizza. </p>
<p> Nobody trusts diets anymore because most of them are hype and some even increase the risk for such serious health problems such as kidney and liver disorders, gout, coronary heat disease, diabetes, stoke and several types of cancer.  </p>
<p> Today, 160,000 fast-food restaurants serve more than 50 million Americans daily. These businesses generate sales in excess of $65 billion annually. </p>
<p> Go see the movie &#8220;Super-Size Me&#8221;. This is an eye opening glimpse of a man who ate nothing but McDonald&#8217;s food for a month. It reveals the truth why Americans are so fat? This movie Super Size Me is a tongue in-cheek &#8211; 1 Cheeseburger Away From Being Fat &#8212; look at the legal, financial and physical costs of America&#8217;s hunger for fast food. &#8220;Super Size Me&#8221; focuses on its gimmick of Spurlock&#8217;s diet, which is admittedly very compelling stuff and entertaining. Although it may seem like Spurlock doesn&#8217;t offer solutions, the audience can figure them out on their own &#8211; we need to be more aware of what we&#8217;re eating, make better food choices and eat reduced portions (if you&#8217;re going to eat it, share it.) People can eat some fast food on occasion (I like pizza and fried rice here-and-there), but it can&#8217;t become the majority of one&#8217;s diet. </p>
<p> Don&#8217;t worry&#8230; you know your fat but don&#8217;t really care; I know I was there once too!</p>

<p> Lifestyle diets focus not on specific foods, but on the way in which one lives, and then suggest changes that will help people lose weight and keep the weight from returning.  Constantly losing and regaining the same 5-10 pounds is dangerous and, over time, can cause serious health conditions.  Dr. Ulrich, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, found that women who diet in that kind of cycle have a lower number of natural killer cells, which are the vital cells in your immune system that target viruses. </p>
<p> This doesn&#8217;t mean that you should not try to lose weight.  Obesity is a major factor in diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other conditions.  However, the healthiest way to lose weight is to make minor changes in your lifestyle that can realistically become a long-term way of life.  Here are some ideas to keep in mind:  </p>
<p> 1.  Plan your eating ahead of time. </p>
<p> 2.  Eat more portions, but make them smaller </p>
<p> 3.  Fiber </p>
<p> 4.  Breathe Deeply and Hydrate </p>
<p> 5.  Make Balanced Food Choices </p>
<p> 6.  Splurge </p>
<p> 1.  Eating without a plan in mind is like driving without a map.  You need to have eating strategies for home, work, traveling, or dining out.  Fill your refrigerator with fresh produce so they are within reach each time you open the door.  Put the foods with high fat and sugar up on the top shelf of the pantry (or in the trash!) so you can&#8217;t get to them easily.  Buy lean protein, low-fat, high-fiber cereals, or <a href="http://www.fatbellygirl.com/tag/frozen-dinners/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Frozen Dinners">frozen dinners</a> that are low in sodium and fat so that you always have a healthy choice.  </p>
<p> 2.  This area is crucial to any lifestyle diet. Many people easily tire of &#8220;rabbit food&#8221; and eat socially in situations where most of the food is not conducive for weight loss.  For these people, reducing portions significantly, by leaving a third of what you would normally eat on your uplate, is a good way to make a lifestyle change.  </p>
<p> 3.  Fiber will help you lose weight because it makes you feel full and helps you with getting the food out. Always look for fiber per serving of 5 grams or more when purchasing cereals. <p> 6.  Every now and then, you need a break.  If you never eat the foods you enjoy, your eating habits will make you rebel, and you will binge.  Give yourself free meal passes one day a week, so you won&#8217;t get the impulse to binge and undo days of hard work. </p>

<p> Those that plan diets do not take into consideration how their thyroids and metabolism may affect their weight loss program. Most experts and even the media pitch in and recommend that the best way to lose weight is cut calories.  </p>
<p> Those with a condition called hyperthyroidism suffer from an overactive thyroid leading to one having his or her metabolism skyrocket. If this is the case, then you will probably lose weight fast. This is a nice proposition for some who wish to lose weight. However, this is actually hazardous to your health.  </p>
<p> Aside from the medical difficulties such a disease brings, one will also notice weight problems as a result. These people have trouble keeping on weight and may notice weakness and bulging of the eyes. This disease may need special treatment from doctors. </p>
<p> Hypothyroidism on the other hand works in the other direction, slowing metabolism until the body gains weight at an incredible rate. Hypothyroidism is more common in women over 50, and causes an upset in the balance of chemical reactions in your body.   Like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism causes a general weakness in the body. It too may need special treatment and may cause serious health problems if left unattended. </p>
<p> While cutting calories in itself can be very hard for most people, imagine the people involved in life and death struggles at the supermarket regarding whether to buy that extra box of sweets, some have exactly the opposite problem.  Instead of eating too many calories which is a problem in itself, they eat too few calories. </p>
<p> The problem with some is that they believe that since the experts say that they have to cut calories, cutting calories to an inordinate amount will reap greater results. Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t work that way. While cutting calories helps diets, consuming too few calories pushed the body into a hoard mode, the body&#8217;s metabolism slowed to adapt to the lesser amount of available energy.  </p>
<p> If your body enters this mode, your body will work at such slow metabolism that losing weight becomes impossible.  The technique here should be to reduce calories without the body slowing its metabolism. Only then can losing weight become easier. </p>
<p> Another problem that can arise from decreased metabolism is that when your metabolism slows due to a drastic reduction in metabolism, and then you suddenly eat a good, hearty, calorie-filled meal, you are bound to gain more weight owing to the increased surplus of energy. </p>
<p> This is why an imbalanced meal is highly discouraged among those that seek to lose weight. The sudden loss and increase of calories will cause an imbalance in one&#8217;s energy consumption directly affecting fat deposit. </p>
<p> Here is a simple computation to help you get to the right amount of calories you will need per day so that you get your nutrients in the right balance. </p>
<p> First of all, multiply your weight in kilograms by 30. If you only know your weight in pounds, divide it by 2.2 to get to its English equivalent. We divide this number by 30 because that is the number of calories you need to maintain your weight per pound of weight.  </p>
<p> For example if your weight in pounds is 150, divide it by 2.2. That will give you a figure of 68.18. This is your weight in kilograms. Multiply this by 30 and you will arrive at the amount of calories you will need per day to maintain 150 lbs. </p>
<p>  In the end it all comes down to math. If you consume more that your body needs, it stores it as fat. Now is probably a good time to start studying the back of those grocery cartons.  Try to keep your diet at 40 fat, and 35% carbohydrates and several small meals per day about 4 to 6 with calories at about 300 per meal for optimum results. </p>
<p> While it may be simple computation to get at numbers, do not forget the earlier mentioned fact that the body adapts to its condition. Expose it to extreme ones and you may find yourself getting results you never wanted.</p>
<p class="articletext">Your thyroid can cause a person to either loss a lot of weight (hyperthyroidism) or to gain a lot of weight (hypothyroidism).  Either condition is very unhealthy and can cause serious medical conditions.</p>
